I visited this very tasty, cosy and authentic coffee house in Amsterdam for the first time in 2006. I visited the city again this summer and am thrilled to see they’re still in business. Usually I try to restrain myself from having mocha (a mix of coffee and hot chocolate) and chocolate cake together. You can’t have too much of a good thing they say…Needless to say I failed this time because Melly’s has irresistible desserts such as fresh alfajores: argentinian cookies (optionally) covered in chocolate. They also sell maté (South-American tea) to take home, serve Celestional Seasonings tea and savoury rolls. Melly’s is situated close to the Dam, a busy square within walking distance of the central station. Find them at Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 137.
Dutch version: Melly’s is een gezellig, kleinschalig koffiehuis met lekkernijen die u echt niet mag missen. Deze zaak is gevestigd in een klassiek pand aan de Amsterdamse Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 137. In 2006 bezocht ik dit koffiehuisje voor het eerst, heel fijn om te zien dat ze nog volop actief zijn.
Ik had mezelf niet helemaal onder controle en combineerde een mocha (koffie met chocolademelk) en chocoladecake. Zo erg is dat eigenlijk niet, want wie wil er nu altijd alles onder controle hebben, toch? Als u gek bent op verse alfajores bent u hier op het goede adres; dit zijn Argentijnse koekjes die al dan niet overgoten worden met gesmolten chocolade. Lunchen met een smakelijk broodje of sandwich is ook mogelijk bij Melly’s, daarbij is een lekker kopje Celestional Seasonings tea of maté (Zuid-Amerikaanse thee) aan te raden. Melly’s verkoopt de maté en alfajores ook om mee naar huis te nemen.
Het koffiehuisje bevind zich op loopafstand van de Dam en het Centraal Station.
